How to Update Your Vehicle Title and Registration After a Name Change in Florida

If you’ve legally changed your name, updating your vehicle records with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) is essential. This ensures your vehicle title and registration match your new legal name and helps avoid issues with insurance, renewals, or selling your car.

Here’s how to handle the name change smoothly.

Step-by-Step: Update Your Florida Vehicle Title & Registration

1. Update Your Driver’s License First

Before you can change your name on your vehicle documents, your Florida driver’s license must be updated to reflect your new name. The DMV will use this ID to verify your identity.

Check out our guide on How to Change Your Name on Your Florida Driver’s License After Marriage if you haven’t completed this step yet.

2. Gather Your Documents

To update your title and registration, you’ll need:

  • Updated Florida driver’s license (with new name)

  • Certified marriage certificate or court order

  • Current vehicle title

  • Completed Form HSMV 82040 (Application for Certificate of Title)

Download the form here:https://www.flhsmv.gov/pdf/forms/82040.pdf

3. Visit Your Local Tax Collector’s Office

Vehicle title and registration updates in Florida are processed through your county tax collector’s office, not the regular DMV.

Locate your local office:https://www.flhsmv.gov/locations/

4. Pay the Required Fees

  • Title correction fee: Usually around $75.25

  • Additional service or local county fees may apply

5. Receive Updated Documents

Once processed, you’ll receive an updated vehicle title in your new name. Your registration will also reflect the change.

Don’t Forget

  • Notify your auto insurance provider of the name change

  • Update your name with EZPass, Toll-By-Plate, or SunPass, if applicable
