This ensures your ID matches your legal name and helps you avoid issues when traveling, voting, or dealing with financial institutions.

Before you go to the DPS, you must update your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The DPS will verify your new name in the federal database when processing your new license.
To update your name with the SSA:
Wait at least 48–72 hours after the SSA confirms your name update before visiting the DPS.
Bring the following with you to the DPS office:
Name changes must be done in person at a DPS driver license office. You cannot change your name online or by mail.
You’ll:
Cost: Usually $11 for a corrected license (may vary slightly by county)
You’ll receive a temporary license on the spot, and your new one will arrive by mail within 2–3 weeks.
